Perhaps best well known for the Alternate Reality Series, Datasoft also produced a number of other action-adventure games. The Alternate Reality series are notable as probably the first fantasy RPG series with no real plot. Rather you spend the game building up your experience and strength, fighting monsters, and just generally trying to survive. This was followed by other similar pointless games like Elder Scrolls: Arena, and generally led to the destruction of the genre in the mid-90's. It came back briefly with Might and Magic VI - IX, but RPG games have never really been as fun since the mid-90's. Maybe I'm just a bitter old man :)
