The 7th Guest was the first commercial game to take full advantage of the vast amount of space available on the newly available storage format: CD-ROM. Until this point, existing games had been 'enhanced' by adding speech or better graphics, but this was the first game designed from the ground up to be run off of CD-ROM, and to make use of Full Motion Video (FMV) with live actors. It would spawn a plethora of copycat FMV games and though the fad eventually died out, there is no doubt as to the significance of this game in gaming history. The game itself consists of a number of unrelated brain teaser puzzles to solve, linked very loosely by a story taking place in a haunted house.
