I finally figured it out! The red text over the answers was how it was printed in the original manuals and you needed the red cellophane glasses to read them. I'd completely forgotten about that.

All of the LucasArts clue books in the museum have red text over the answers. They're sort of useless this way. Is there supposed to be some way to remove this that I'm missing?

One of the best adventure games of all times, Zak is a huge game taking you to nearly a dozen countries around the globe in your quest to thwart the evil plan of the aliens to reduce Earthlings' IQs through the phone system. Great theme music and one of the most memorable intros of any game.
